GFCI Outlet Installation and Repair

“GFCI” stands for “Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter” outlet. You probably already have a few GFCI receptacles installed in your home’s bathrooms. These grounded, three-prong electrical outlets have their own “reset” and “test” buttons on the outlet cover.

You should install GFCI outlets in any parts of your home where your electrical fixtures may contact water. If you don’t have any of these outlets, then get in touch with Applewood right away!

What Are GFCI Outlets For?

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets are a very important home safety device. They function the same way most outlets do, but they have an additional safety function: the receptacle contains a component that protects people from electrical shocks.

GFCI outlets automatically sense when the electrical devices plugged into them are wet and react by cutting off the electricity flowing into the outlet. This keeps electricity from shocking you when it arcs through the water on the fixture. These outlets work well in kitchens, bathrooms and any other areas where electrical fixtures could get wet.

How Do GFCI Outlets Work?

GFCI outlets continually monitor the current of electricity flowing through them. When they detect even the slightest interruption in that electrical current, then they cut off the electrical flow immediately by flipping a miniature version of a circuit breaker located in the receptacle itself. The circuit remains broken until you manually reset it at the outlet. Check out the video below to learn about how these outlets work in more detail:
